Natural gas is a fossil fuel and non-renewable resource that is formed when layers of organic matter decompose under anaerobic conditions and are subjected to intense heat and pressure underground over millions of years.
The energy that the decayed organisms originally obtained from the sun via photosynthesis is stored as chemical energy within the molecules of methane and other hydrocarbons.
Natural gas can be burned for heating, cooking, and electricity generation. It is also used as a chemical feedstock in the manufacture of plastics and other commercially important organic chemicals and less commonly used as a fuel for vehicles.
Efficient Energy Source
An economical, environmentally friendly, and efficient energy source, natural gas is the cleanest-burning conventional fuel, producing lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions than heavier hydrocarbon fuels such as coal and oil.
Historically, natural gas has also been one of the most economical energy sources. Natural gas fuels electric power generators, heats buildings, and is used as a raw material in many consumer products, such as those made of traditional plastics.

Understanding natural gas
Natural gas is a combustible gas consisting mainly of highly flammable methane (CH4). It also contains nitrogen (N2) and small amounts of other hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane and butane, as well as traces of helium, and in some cases hydrogen sulfide.
